Unfortunately, for many years, society has perceived cannabis to be just a ‘gateway’ drug that people use for the sole purpose of getting ‘high’, to eventually move on to harder drugs. Although everyone’s personal relationship with cannabis varies, there are more people relying on cannabis to self-medicate than  those who abuse it. The good part about all this is that we have grown as a society. Because of that, our knowledge on this sacred plant has also evolved. Cannabis is becoming more accepted by adults of all ages to help bring relief to certain disorders and chronic pain, especially for the elderly. This is because cannabis has been one of the oldest forms of pain relief treatments in human history that dates as far back as 2900 BC, when it was very common in Eastern medicine. Various clinical studies have shown that the compounds in cannabis can essentially help alleviate nerve and joint pain, especially from those suffering from arthritis.

There are so many advantages from this plant that can help you feel more like yourselves, apart from your pains and discomforts, that just come from the wear and tear of life. One of the ways it can help, is that various studies have shown cannabis can assist in treating glaucoma, which is a neurodegenerative disease that over time, damages the optic nerve by increasing the pressure in the eyes. Which can disrupt vision and cause pain and discomfort. Cannabis has also been shown to reduce insomnia without the dependency of a sleeping pill. If a person cannot reach their deep sleep (REM sleep), which is difficult for many, it can cause further delays in the way the brain regenerates and releases toxins when one sleeps. Without proper sleep, it may increase the chance for more age-related illnesses, like Alzheimer’s.

Cannabis is also a great alternative for pain relief to bring up to your doctor. Unfortunately, the number of seniors using prescription pain medicines have increased remarkably over the last few decades. The worst part is, is that these medicines can cost a fortune and may also have adverse side effects on the rest of the body. Cannabis is known to increase appetite as well. This is very beneficial for some seniors who may not have much of an appetite. Cannabis is sure to activate the munchies which can help with appetite and energy management. It’s also known to help anxiety that can come from certain life adjustments when one gets older. Cannabis is not just for younger adults; many seniors can benefit from cannabis to help improve their overall health of the body and mind. It’s advisable that you speak with your doctor if you are considering substituting pain medication with cannabis.
