We're all pretty familiar with the many ways to consume cannabis but there’s another simple and smokeless way to, and that's using tinctures. Tinctures are an alcohol-based solution, infused with extracts from the cannabis flower. Cannabis tinctures contain a whole range of cannabinoids as well. They are administered either orally or sublingually (under the tongue). They can be mixed in most foods and beverages, such as coffees, smoothies, soups, salad dressings, etc.
Tinctures are packaged usually in small glass bottles with droppers as caps, marked in milliliters (ml). Because the dropper is marker in ml, it's a great way for beginners to have more control over their dose. Dosing with tinctures involves trial and error and a lot of patience and being that all consumers are different, it's best to start with a 1ml dose.
When you consume a tincture sublingually, you should expect to feel its full effects more quickly then with your typical edible. That's because the thin tissues under your tongue are home to many blood vessels, which makes the absorption of the tincture into your bloodstream quick. Usually in about 5-15 mins, the effects of the tincture kicks in.
Cannabis tinctures are enjoyed to bring about feelings of relaxation, sleep, focus or energy. They can be very beneficial to curbing nausea and kick starting your appetite. They are also used for those struggling with anxiety and depression. As well as those battling chronic pain due to inflammation within the body. Tinctures that are high in CBD can help with inflammation due to osteoporosis or osteoarthritis and High THC tinctures can ease chronic pain, anxiety, depression stress and even help recovery from substance abuse.
Using a cannabis tincture is a healthy and subtle way to enjoy your cannabis, without worrying about your extra caloric intake from an edible. And due to their small bottles and low aroma, they can be taken subtly when you wake up, in your coffee in the morning, at your desk, in your lunch smoothie, or during your trip to the bathroom, sublingually. As long as you close the bottle tightly after use, they don't give off any aroma, so it's a good way to treat discreetly. Tinctures can last for years when stored properly in a dark and cool place, such as a closet or cupboard.
Using tinctures is not a new concept. The first account of cannabis tinctures dated as far back as the 1800s. In 1851, tinctures first appeared in the United States Pharmacopeia, under the name of 'Extractum Cannabis Purificatum' (purified extract of Indian hemp). Believe it or not cannabis tinctures were actually an accepted form of medicine in the UK around that time. Queen Victoria's personal physician prescribed a cannabis tincture to help relieve her menstrual cramps. With that being said Cannabis Tinctures are pretty much royalty, right?
