Blog: Post: Glaucoma and Cannabis

Glaucoma is a complex eye condition that many people request medical marijuana for, as treatment. Glaucoma is when the optic nerve (the nerve cable that connects the eye to the brain), which is vital for good vision, gets damaged by an irregularly high amount of fluid pressure within the eye. It can cause severe pain, discomfort and unfortunately, it is one of the most common leading causes of blindness, affecting more that 60 million people worldwide, especially those over the age of 60.

Research dating back, as early as the 1970s show that both cannabis and the THC in the plant, helps to reduce pressure within the eye. Of course, we never suggest mixing medication with cannabis. Always speak with your doctor first to get the okay, before trying any alternative method of treatment. The powerful thing about cannabis though, is that it’s known to create a 25 percent intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction in 60-65 percent of people with glaucoma, which is what causes many of the pain and discomfort, so with lower eye pressure comes temporary relief.
