Your bud has what you call terpenes in it. They are the oils secreted by the plant, that gives your bud its distinct aroma, flavor and even its color. A few examples of the terpenes in your bud are Myrcene, Pinene, Caryophyllene, Limonene and Terpinolene. Each one of these plays a major role in altering the effects of different cannabis strains. Some terpenes like Myrcene (Herbal- found in hops, lemongrass, mango), Pinene (Pine- found in pine needles, basil, rosemary, dill) and Caryophyllene (Peppery- found in cloves, cinnamon, pepper) are known to stimulate feelings of relaxation and pain relief to help aid in stress relief. While others like Limonene (Citrus-found in fruit rinds, juniper, rosemary, peppermint) and Terpinolene (Fruity-found in tea tree, nutmeg, cumin, lilacs) promote more energetic effects like euphoria and focus to keep you sharp. The terpenes in your bud, vary from plant to plant and are usually influenced by its outer environment, such as the weather, its age/maturation, as well as its soil type and time of day.
The storing of your bud requires some additional TLC because if not stored properly, you can alter its chemical makeup and eliminate the magic of its full potential. I mean who wants to mess with the sublime nature of the cannabis plant. The top four things that can alter your bud is: HUMIDITY, AIR, LIGHT and TEMPERATURE.
The best way to maintain your flower, is to store it in a clean, dry, airtight container (preferably glass). Make sure it’s in a cool, dark place (cupboard, closet, drawer, etc.) and keep it away from extreme temperatures. Extreme temperatures can alter your bud’s potency and mess with its flavors and aromas. For instance, it’s suggested to keep your bud away from direct sunlight because similarly to how the UV rays from the sun can fade the color of your favorite shirt, it can do the same to your bud. Another important thing to remember, is to keep your bud away from high moisture because naturally, anything left in high moisture environments, increase your chances of growing mold and nobody wants wet and moldy bud. Following these suggestions will help you preserve your flower in order to enjoy it for longer and in its best form.
